Identity fraud hit a record high in 2017, with 174,523 incidents in the UK, with the majority happening online*. Access to information and applying for services online is quick and convenient but with that convenience comes the risk of identity thieves who want to steal your valuable personal data, such as name, address, date of birth, social security, bank account information, credit card numbers, and mobile numbers, with the intention of using it to commit identity fraud.

When data stolen includes an email address and password, identity thieves will then try to target and take over other accounts, like an email account. From there they’ll use that to reset passwords elsewhere, like for online banking, enabling them to access and steal money from bank accounts.

The Dark Web is at the bottom of the internet, and is not visible to everyday users on the public web and search engines such as Google. The Dark Web is mostly used for fraudsters illegally buying and selling personal data such as visas, stolen credit cards, weapons, drugs, and child pornography, all with hidden IP addresses.
